CUTTING FLUIDS
CUTTING FLUIDS OBJECTIVES • • • State the importance and function of cutting fluids. Identify three types of cutting fluids and state the purpose of each Identify cutting fluid application methods.
Cutting Fluid Functions • Lubrication – reduces heat-creating friction: improved chip flow. – 1/3 of the generated heat can be reduced. • Cooling – removes heat from 1) the cutting tool 2) the chip 3) the work-piece
NONCUTTING FUNCTIONS • Rust & Corrosion Prevention – protects the machine and machined parts • Non-flammability – preferably noncombustible and should not smoke excessively. • Bacterial Control – Bacteria will eventually destroy water -based cutting fluids. (And make it stink)
CUTTING FLUID BENEFITS • Increased Productivity – Reduced Friction and Heat – Higher Speeds can be used • Reduction of Labor Costs – Less downtime • Improved Surface Finishes • Reduction of Tool Costs – Reduced Tool Wear • Improved Accuracy
Types of Cutting Fluids • • Emulsions (water soluble) Semi-synthetic (semi-chemical) Synthetic (chemical Fluids) Straight Cutting Oils
Synthetic Fluids (chemical fluids) • Contain very little oil • Depend upon chemical agents for: 1) lubrication 2) rust prevention 3) bacterial control
Emulsions (Soluble Oils) • Mineral oils mixed with water • Emulsifiers are needed.
Semi-synthetic fluids • Chemical fluids mixed with cutting oils • Two main types: 1) plain type 2) extreme-pressure type - chlorine and sulfur are added
Straight Cutting Oils • Not mixed with water. • Two classifications 1) Inactive Cutting Oils - very little sulfur is released/does not react 2) Active Cutting Oils - releases sulfur/reacts with work surface
CUTTING FLUIDS Applications: • Flood • Spray-Mist
CUTTING FLUIDS Applications: • Through the Tool
CUTTING FLUIDS Review Questions 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Name two important functions of a cutting fluid. Name the four main types of cutting fluids. Name 3 methods of applying cutting fluids. List the non-cutting functions of a good cutting fluid. What is a emulsifier? Name the two classifications of straight cutting oils.
