DATA TERMINOLOGY Not everyone interprets data in the same way
Ridership and Boardings Ridership is the total number of linked trips. Boardings is the total number of unlinked trips. A linked trip is a single trip from origin to destination. Trips made using transfers are only counted once. An unlinked trip is a segment of a trip from onboarding to offboarding a transit vehicle.

Revenue and Non-Revenue Operating Statistics Revenue operating statistics represent mileage during which passenger transportation is provided. *Mileage is considered revenue even if no passengers are on board, but passenger service is being offered. Non-Revenue operating statistics represent mileage where passenger transportation is NOT being provided. This includes deadhead time.
Revenue VS Non-Revenue A bus drives for 1 hour from one bus stop to the next and picks up 3 passengers The bus has accrued 1 revenue vehicle hour for driving 1 hour while offering passenger service A subway train drives 10 km from the end of its route back to the garage. The subway train has accrued 10 non-revenue vehicle kilometres for driving 10 kilometres without offering any passenger service For a training test, a light rail train is driven from one stop to the next which takes 1 hour to travel 45 km. The light rail train has accrued 1 non-revenue vehicle hour and 45 non-revenue vehicle kilometres for its trip which did not offer any passenger service
Regular and Auxiliary Service Regular Service Auxiliary Service Any local public transportation service that is available to anyone who pays a prescribed fare. Any transportation service where routes and schedules are arranged to meet the needs of passengers who sign up in advance (usually arranged through charter or contractual agreement), AND/OR serves a non-local community. *A community is considered local if the transportation service has exclusive rights to operate there.

Service Area Population The number of permanent residents living in a region or municipality. The number of permanent residents living in proximity to public transportation. *A CUTA standard is 400 metres from a service route.
Service Area Population Permanent residents living in orange homes are living within access to public transit and are therefore counted as part of the service area population. Permanent residents living in all homes are counted as part of the municipal or regional population.

Total and Active Registrants Total Registrants Active Registrants The number of individuals who are eligible for specialized transit services AND who have registered for passenger service AND have used the passenger service at least once during the reporting year.

Dedicated and Non-Dedicated Service A passenger service where vehicles are operated only for specialized transit. A passenger service where vehicles are not necessarily servicing just specialized transit service.
Trips Requested and Passenger Trips Requested* Passenger Trips* The number of trips that were requested by passengers prior to travel. The number of trips taken by passengers from origin to destination. Trips that cannot be accommodated or are cancelled are still counted as requested trips. *Round trips are considered as 2 passenger trips and 2 trips requested.
Trips Requested/Passenger Trips Scenario 1 Hello, I’d like to schedule a trip for tomorrow at 5 PM for my clinic appointment Sorry, but 5 PM is outside our operating hours and so we cannot accommodate your trip request Although this trip could not be accommodated, it is still counted as 1 trip requested. Scenario 2 Hello, I’d like to schedule a trip to and from the clinic for myself and my attendant at 10: 30 AM tomorrow. Certainly! We will send a driver to pick up you and your attendant at 10 AM. One round trip was requested which counts as 2 trips requested. Two passengers are on board for each trip and therefore the total number of passenger trips is 4 passenger trips
