CPR Steps 1. 2. 3. 4. Check the scene for safety Shout-tap-shout and check breathing Call 911 Position your body correctly by: a) kneeling beside the person’s upper chest, b) placing your hands in the correct position (fingers interlocked, pulling fingers up and away from chest). c) keeping your arms and elbows as straight as possible so that your shoulders are directly over your hands d) Locate the correct hand position by placing the heel of one hand on the person’s sternum (breastbone) at the center of his or her chest.
CPR Steps 5. Give chest compressions a) At a rate of 100 -120/minute b) Give compressions by pushing the sternum down at least 2 inches c) After each compression, release the pressure on the chest without removing your hands or changing hand position 6. Continue CPR until: • EMS arrives/someone else takes over • Scene becomes unsafe • AED is ready to use • Too exhausted to continue • Victim shows signs of life
Group Practice • Each student practice Hands Only CPR 2 -3 times. – One partner "rescuer" performs CPR – Other partners "instructor" prompting the rescuer ONLY as needed – checking the instructions – Third partner "observer" will provide feedback to the rescuer ONLY at the end of their practice round
