Curriculum Subjects • Most curriculum subjects will be integrated units of study • Some topics and activities will overlap i. e. , Science content in Language: Reading, Writing, Music, Art etc. • Computer integration into subject areas whenever possible
Curriculum Continued Most of the curriculum is delivered as integrated units. This means, for example, our Science or Social Studies content will be used in other subject areas such as Language. Here are some unit topics/skills that we have or will be studying this term: Math Language -Place Value and Addition/Subtraction -Patterning -Surveying/Graphing Writing -Writing Traits – ideas, organization and voice -procedural writing, summaries, biographies -grammar skills/parts of speech -process writing using planners Reading Comprehension skills: -summarizations, visualizations and making connections -Canadian prose/poems -biographies, poetry, info texts -genres identification Speaking/Listening- question/response skills -summarizing main points Media -creating and analysing productsi. e. title pages Science Gr. 5 – Properties of Matter, Human Body Systems Social Studies –Gr. 5 - Canadian Government Art -elements of design: colour, shape, line and texture Products: masks, paper crafts, pastel, painting and collage works Drama -Readers’ Theatre presentations -control games -role playing Dance -coordination and presentation skills, hip-hop Phys. Ed. -Cooperative games -Borden Ball -Soccer Skills/Cross Country Running Health -Injury prevention -Building positive relationships -Nutrition analysis
Homework • It is suggested that students should have 10 minutes x the grade level per day. i. e. Gr. 5 = 50 mins. • Should consist of practice of skills/knowledge taught that day or previously • May be unfinished work • Reading (15 minutes minimum) • Parents are encouraged to ask their children to talk about their work
• Students show completed homework to parents • A parent’s initials means you saw completed work • Even if work is completed at school and is on the Agenda, it should be brought home for sharing! • It is student’s responsibility to bring home all Agenda items and return them to school

Balance Literacy Approach • Read Aloud and Modelled Writing (whole group) • Shared Reading and Writing (whole group) • Guided Reading and Writing (small group) • Independent Reading and Writing (alone) • Working with Words (grammar, vocabulary, spelling patterns, etc. )
• Problem solving and language based • Bansho approach where students discover strategies through/in “the solving” of the problem • Not just pencil-paper math or memorization of processes • Many strategies/tools used e. g. calculators
• Have physical education indoors and outdoors 2 times per week each • DPA (Daily Physical Activity) which consists mostly of movement exercises, games, dance, etc. in the classroom
