Ideas based on experimental data or beliefs about the best way to learn material What is a Learning Theory?
• Behaviorism • Cognitivism • Constructivism • Design Based • Humanism Current Learning Theories 5 main theory groups
Behaviorism • The behavior of an individual reflects the best learning style • Utilizes punishment/reward system, feedback and practice • Pavlov, Skinner and Watson use this theory
Cognitivism • Brain is viewed as a computer that can be programmed • Thinking, memory and knowing are basic concepts • Briggs, Wagner and Bruner use this theory
Constructivism • Learning is constructing mental maps or buildings out of information • Context, background and interpretation are major focuses • Vygotsky, Piaget, Bruner use this theory
Design Based • Based on empirical data and analytics, unique and specialized pathways of learning are created • Scaffolding and motivation are considered during construction of lessons • Kress, Keller, Soloway are examples
Humanism • Focuses on the whole individual’s needs, over time, and creating a free, selfsufficient individual • Considers personal goals, self exploration and motivation • Rogers and Maslow are major contributors
Which is Best? Cognitivism and Behaviorism Constructivism, Design-Based & Humanism • Do not treat students as people • Students are considered clones • Students are considered unique • Focuses on student control • Student desires and freedom are explored
Blending Theories • From Constructivism use background, context and interpretation • From Design-Based use scaffolding and motivation • From Humanism use selfexploration and personal goals
No One Right Way • Consider student differences • Consider class differences • Consider the class subject • Try one, try another, try them blended • Document methods that have worked and failed and openly communicate with other teachers
