CURRAN AND SEATON
Media industries are dominated by a small number of giant conglomerates – makes the BBC stand out as it is reliable and trustworthy due to it being not for profit. Production companies – the big 6 Media companies are all about profit and power this isn’t the case for independent producers as much – more about the message Concentrated leadership results in lack of choice, lots of the same product as that is what sells the most. Explains series’ of films. This results in less creativity and this is why independent companies have more creativity as they aren’t all about profit and power e. g. the blair witch project.
This theory applies to our case studies because the Guardian is an independent trust which therefor means its one of the small media intuitions from Curran and Seaton’s theory. Applying this theory it suggests the Guardian is more creative with its content and unique with its approach. As the Daily Mail is in the DMGT, according to Curran and Seaton, the paper will be more focused on generating income than reporting the news innovatively. They will stick to ‘safe’ stories for example the coverage of the royal family. This theory contrasts with Shirky who argues us as the audience have become more involved by producing out own sources of news through the use of social media.
CRITICISMS This theory does not take into account news brands ideologies, target audiences or even the effect of the media language. Does not help us understand fully why papers have made certain editorial decisions; its not enough to just say that because they are differently funded they are different papers.
