Culture Change A culture change is the name given to a transformation that requires modifications in practices, physical environment, language, and relationships
Culture Change What does a culture change mean to the nursing home industry? Nursing homes have to adapt and embrace the new trend by: ▪ Remodeling their facility to create a modern setting and gear away from the institutional look ▪ Staff members and management must buy into the culture change trend ▪ Create spacious rooms with private bathrooms, flat screen TVs and computers with wireless internet access if possible ▪ Offer a multicultural menu to accommodate all cultures with a variety of choices ▪ Create a home away from home with a comfortable living area ▪ Introduce a more contemporary area where residents and family members can socialize ( coffee shop, snack shop, etc. ) ▪ Allow residents to plan their meals, outings, activities, etc.
Why Implement a Culture Change? The reason we should implement a culture change is because : Many people oppose the idea of being placed in a nursing home due to: ▪ Too many restrictions and not allowed to make their own decisions ▪ Do not like being told when to eat, bathe, start their mornings, etc. ▪ Meals on trays even served in a dining room are considered institutional ▪ Complicated and restricted diets ▪ It is not like home ▪ NO CHOICES!
The Language of Culture Change We as health care professionals must adapt and encourage our staff to change the language we use with our residents to preserve their dignity Examples: Patient resident or person Feeder people who require dining assistance Wanderers people who like to walk Walkers people who use a walker Toilet residents who need help in the bathroom Demented people with cognitive losses Mech soft food chopped food Ambulate walk Fourteen-hour rule freedom of choice
