Culture • Culture means the things that can be used to describe a group of people. It includes specific beliefs, traditions, music, styles of clothes, languages, holidays, and food. • People from different cultures live in the United States.
Culture All Over the World • People in different parts of the world speak different languages, wear different clothing, and celebrate different holidays.
Foods From Other Cultures • Can you think of any foods that you or your family eat that come from another country or culture?
Clothes in Other Cultures • What kinds of clothes do different people wear?
Ethnic Origin • The race or group of people that a person belongs to • Where is your family from? • Does not always mean skin color!
Diversity • When people come to America from other cultures, they bring their customs and traditions (beliefs, ideas, music, and other things that make them unique) with them. • Diversity means differences in culture.
Diversity • People in Virginia have diverse ethnic origins, customs, traditions and contribute to their communities by practicing the responsibilities of being a good citizen.
How are you diverse? • What customs and traditions (information and beliefs handed down from one generation to another) do you and you family have?
United • Citizens in the United States share some common customs and traditions. • Citizens have the responsibility to participate in voting to elect (choose) their government (the group of people who make laws and rules for a community).
