Herbert Schiller (1970 s) Most descriptive and influential scholar He created the Cultural Imperialism Theory definition in his Communication and Cultural Domination “the concept of cultural imperialism today best describes the sum of the processes by which a society is brought into the modern world system and how its dominating stratum is attracted, pressured, forced and sometimes bribed into shaping social institutions to correspond to, or even promote, the values and structures of the dominating centre of the system. ” (Schiller, 1976). Schiller focused on the international trade in information products, mostly television programs. (Schiller, 1970).
Imposing the Will of God “When the first American missionaries prepared to leave the shores of New England in 1812, Jonathan Allen, a respected minister of the gospel, delivered an exhortation to the women of the company. Speaking to them directly, he reminded the women that they were “now engaged in the best of causes, ” specifically, the delivery of women in foreign lands from oppression. Allen proclaimed the call for American women to “enlighten” the minds of their foreign sisters and to “raise their character. ” (Nation 2016, p. 22).
According to James Petras (2000). “Cultural imperialism has taken both 'traditional' and modern forms. In past centuries, the Church, educational system, and public authorities played a major role in inculcating native peoples with ideas of submission and loyalty in the name of divine or absolutist principles. ” (Petras 2000). “The mass media, publicity, advertisement and secular entertainers and intellectuals play a major role today. In the contemporary world, Hollywood, CNN and Disneyland are more influential than the Vatican, the Bible or the public relations rhetoric of political figures. Cultural penetration is closely linked to politico-military domination and economic exploitation. ” (Petras 2000).
Colin Sparks (2012) Many scholars are discrediting Cultural Imperialism but Sparks does not believe that it should be not be dismissed but revised. Sparks revises Schillers definition of Cultural Imperialism “the ways in which state power and cultural power are intertwined in the production and circulation of cultural artefacts” (Sparks 2012, 294) Sparks states that Cultural Imperialism is “an essential part of theoretical framework for the study of international communication”(Sparks 2012, 296)
