What is cultural diffusion? • When aspects of a culture spread outward from where

What is cultural diffusion? • When aspects of a culture spread outward from where it originated. • Origin point = hearth/cultural hearth. • Aspects could be- clothing, language, religion, food, music, sports, technology, etc… • This topic is extremely important for our class! We must understand culture and why aspects of culture are seen, or not seen, in areas all around the world. • There are lots of ways in which culture has diffused locally, regionally, and globally.

Two main groups of diffusion • Expansion • Relocation • Diffusion occurs using many different methods, spreading to people near and far. • Diffusion occurs due to human migration. • Methods could be: print, media, social media, TV, movies, pop culture, technology, etc… • Three main ways this occurs: • Contagious • Hierarchical • Stimulus • People move from one place to another, bringing their culture with them. • Once in a new place, aspects of the new culture can diffuse using many methods.
