Cubism: Young Ladies of D’Avignon, 1907 -Shows five prostitutes in a brothel in D’Avignon. -Faces modelled on African and Iberian sculpture. -Thought to be the 1 st Cubist artwork. -Fractured and sharp, using limited colour palette.
Cubism: Guernica, 1937 -Painted in response to the atrocities committed during the Spanish Civil War. -Depicts the bombing of the small town of Guernica on market day. -Painting is still so powerful as an outcry against war that it remains behind bulletproof glass. -“Painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an act of war. ”
