general SHOOTING RANGE RULES 1. This range may be opened only by a qualified BSA-certified range master. 2. All commands issued by the range master must be obeyed immediately. 3. Stay behind the firing line. Do not straddle the firing line. 4. Do not pick up a gun, bow, arrow, or slingshot unless told to by the range master. 5. Absolutely no running on the range. 6. Safety Most guns have a mechanism which aids in keeping the gun from accidentally firing. This device is called a safety, however, Bows do not have a safeties!! The primary safety is the Shooter You have to keep the bow safe when you use it. 2/15/2022 Draft 8

Dominant Eye Everyone has a dominant eye. It is the stronger eye and does more work than the other. Following are the steps to determine the dominant eye. • Extend both arms in front of your body. • Place your hands together, forming a small opening between them. • Keep both eyes open; look through the opening at a distant object. • While continuing to look at the object, move both hands back toward your body until they touch your face. • The opening will be over one eye, the dominant eye. Safety Equipment 1. Always wear a wrist guard to avoid serious pain when the string from the bow slaps that part of your arm 2. Finger guards are optional, but when shooting a lot, will help avoid blisters on the shooting fingers 2/15/2022 Draft 13

Shooting Stance 1. Turn your body 90 degrees away from the target in the direction of your dominant eye. 2. The bow should be in the hand closest to the target. 3. Space your feet shoulder-length apart. 4. Turn only your head to face the target. 2/15/2022 Draft 14

Nock 1. Nock the arrow with the bow facing down range. 2. The arrow should be on the same side of the bow as the arm that is holding the bow (left arm, left side - right arm, right side) 3. If necessary, tilt the bow slightly so the arrow stays in the arrow rest while nocking. 4. Always nock the arrow with the odd colored fletching pointing away from the bow. 2/15/2022 Draft 15

Draw and Aim 1. Using the first crook in your first three fingers, "hook" the string keeping the arrow nock between the first and second fingers. 2. Holding the bow arm straight, pull the string back until your hand is near your face. The hand should come back to the same place every time if shooting aim is to be consistent. 3. While drawing the string back, begin aiming at the target. 2/15/2022 Draft 16

Release and Follow Through 1. Concentrate and aim 2. Release: When the draw is complete and aim is good, release the string by straightening the fingers holding it. 3. Follow Through: Do Not Move until you see the arrow land. This will provide the follow-through necessary for consistent shots. 2/15/2022 Draft 17

Retrieving Arrows 1. Always put the non-pulling hand on the target around the arrow to be removed. 2. Pull the arrow out the same direction it went in while pushing against the target. 3. Follow the same procedure if the arrow missed the target. 4. Return the arrows to the ground quiver by hold them point down with both hands. 5. Leave any arrow that falls beyond the shooting line no matter how close it is to you. 2/15/2022 Draft 18

Whistle Range Commands 1. One Whistle Blast – nock your arrow and begin shooting. 2. Two Whistle Blasts – archers may proceed to the Shooting Line and take correct stance. 3. Three Whistle Blasts – walk forward and safely retrieve your arrows. 4. Five or More Whistle Blasts (series of whistle blasts) – STOP SHOOTING IMMEDIATLEY and place arrows in quiver. 2/15/2022 Draft 20
