CSMN Friday Fellowship Last time we discussed the “People of the Promise”, the descendants of Abraham: Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. Today we will discuss “the call to walk in the ways of God” including the role of Moses, and how God leads the Hebrew people, living in slavery in Egypt, out of slavery and giving them the Law during their 40 years of wandering in de desert, before entering the promised land. The need for a deliverer became obvious.

We learned that the 70 Hebrew people stayed in Egypt where they were helped by Joseph in times of famine. They were assigned land, called Goshen, in the eastern part of Egypt (Gen. 45: 10). Watch the Stranger on the Road to Emmaus, chapter 7. 2 (8 minutes) Discuss questions section 1 in a small group.

The Call to Walk in the Ways of God gives the Hebrew people the Law God brought the people to the same mountain (Horeb or Sinai) where He had appeared to Moses in the burning bush. What did God ask the people to be and do for Him? Read Ex. 19: 5 -6. They were to obey Him and keep His covenant; and they were to represent Him to all the nations of the earth. The people promised that they would keep God’s law (verse 8).

Throughout their long history, the Hebrew people continually disobeyed God punished the rebellion of the people in various ways, often by using a foreign nation to oppress them. But God remained faithful to Israel and forgave them when they repented. Judges 2: 11 -23, Introduces the cycle of sin, judgment, repentance and deliverance during the period of the judges. God sent prophets to call the people back to Himself. More about the prophets, next week. The prophets predicted the coming Deliverer who would conquer sin, Satan, and death, forever.
