CSI: Thesis Paper MR. GREENER
Crime Scene Investigation Finding evidence is like investigating a crime. Step 1 -State your thesis. This is like making your theory about the crime, deciding who you think did it and why. Step 2 -Search for evidence-This is like dusting for fingerprints, conducting interviews, and analyzing the scene. You need to prove that what you’ve theorized is true. Step 3 -File your citation-Just like investigators have to carefully handle and legally process their evidence using warrants and legal motions, you need to accurately cite the source that you use.
State your thesis We’ve already talked about what a thesis is. Here’s a sample for you from the book… Garvey helped Cole so much when he didn’t deserve it because he saw Cole as being like himself when he was young.
Search for Evidence Here are some places from the book that might support my thesis. “Then do it for yourself. You’re also a victim. Something terrible has happened to you to make you want to kill a poor small animal. ” Pg. 21 “To heal. Justice should heal, not punish. If you kill my cat, you need to become more sensitive to animals. You and I need to be friends, and I need to forgive you to get over my anger. ” Pg. 22 “We still believe in you and think there’s hope, ” Garvey said. “Because of that, we’ve stuck our necks out so far, we feel like two giraffes. ” Pg. 185 “Stay angry if you want—it’s up to you. When I was here at your age, I found it was good to carry the rock every morning after my swim. ” Pg. 217
File your citation All your citations need to be done according to MLA format, which means placing parentheses after your quote the look like the following. “Your quote. ” (Author, page number) Here’s an example: “‘Stay angry if you want—it’s up to you. When I was here at your age, I found it was good to carry the rock every morning after my swim. ’” (Mikaelsen, 217)
Now it’s your turn As a class, we’re going to practice using a sample thesis I give you. Using Socrative, we’ll look through the text and come up with pieces of evidence to support the sample thesis. After this, we’ll have some time for you to do textual research on your own thesis.
