CSI ASSIGNMENT 2 CHILD ABUSE
CHILD ABUSE v Child abuse is an injustice issue. v Millions of children is suffering from child abuse and it is going unnoticed. v Child abuse is the physical, sexual or emotional maltreatment or neglect of a child or children. v Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse might be the most visible, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse and neglect, also leave deep, lasting scars. v All types of child abuse and neglect leave lasting scars. Some of these scars might be physical, but emotional scarring has long lasting effects throughout life.
CHILD ABUSE Types of child abuse: v Physical abuse: Any non-accidental injury to a child. This includes hitting, kicking, slapping, shaking, burning, pinching, hair pulling, biting, choking, throwing, shoving, whipping, and paddling. v Neglect: Failure to provide for a child’s physical needs. This includes lack of supervision, inappropriate housing or shelter, inadequate provision of food and water, inappropriate clothing for season or weather, abandonment, denial of medical care and inadequate hygiene. v Emotional abuse: Any attitude or behaviour which interferes with a child’s mental health or social development. This includes yelling, screaming, name-calling, shaming, negative comparisons to others, telling them they are “bad, no good, worthless” or “a mistake. ”
FACTS ABOUT CHILD ABUSE v Around 5 children die every day because of child abuse. v 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will be sexually abused before they reach the age of 18. v 90% of child sexual abuse victims know the offender in some way. v 68% are abused by a family member. v In 2010, 1, 537 children died of abuse or neglect. v Studies have found abused and neglected children to be at least 25% more likely to experience problems such as teen pregnancy, low academic achievement, drug use and mental health problems. v Most children become victims of abuse and neglect at 18 months or younger.
SONG THAT HIGHLIGHTS CHILD ABUSE Taylor Swift – Tell Me Why http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=TIGdzjax. Lzw Taylor swift sings from the child's point of view. “You took a swing, I took it hard”. In her lyrics she shows how scared the child is and how it is someone she loves that is hurting her. “Makes me run for cover when you’re around” “You tell me that you love me then you cut me down”. The child feels useless and unloved. “Why do you have to make me feel small”. No child should ever feel that. Taylor is trying to raise awareness on this issue by singing about it and letting people know how the child feels. “You might thing I’m bulletproof, but I’m not”.
ORGANISATIONS TO DO WITH CHILD ABUSE Barnardos: v Barnardos works directly with children and families who need us most, providing services and support. They also campaign for the rights of all children in Ireland. v Bardardos respond to the needs of each child and family, and provide practical and professional supports to bring hope into situations where hope is sometimes lost. v Barnardos campaigns to improve Governmental laws, policies and procedures across all areas that affect children's lives. v Barnardos' mission is to challenge and support families, communities, society and government to make Ireland the best place in the world to be a child, focusing specifically on children and young people whose wellbeing is under threat. v Barnardos' vision is an Ireland where childhood is valued and all children and young people are cherished equally.
ORGANISATIONS TO DO WITH CHILD ABUSE CARI: v CARI offer a helpline for children that have been affected. v CARI offer face to face appointments for parents and carers where there is an express and immediate need. v CARI have professionally trained advisors to help children. v CARI aim to remove all forms of child abuse and child neglect. v CARI provides child-centred therapy's for children and support for their parents, carers and families who have been affected by abuse.
HOW WE CAN HELP v We as a class could get more educated about child abuse and its effects. v We could make presentations to show other groups, to raise awareness of the injustice issue. v We could sell Child Awareness ribbons which will raise awareness and raise money that we could donate to organisations that deal with the issue. v As a group we could visit crèches and schools to play with the children to make them feel appreciated and wanted. v We could make posters that highlight the issue and stick them up in our local school and towns.
