CRUSHED BY GUILT REMADE BY GRACE Psalm 51
PSALM 51 For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. 51 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. 4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. 6 Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom. 7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice. 9 Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities.
PSALM 51 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise. 16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. 18 By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.
CRUSHED WITH GUILT WELL If you’ve never been crushed well then let me be plain, you’re not a Christian. Only someone who has been crushed well can recognise what Christ did for us when he died for our sins. You cannot have gratitude for your salvation unless you’ve been crushed well and have looked right in the face of your guilt. Many people don’t get the guilt of sin balanced with the grace of God. Some live the life of rotten no good sinners and are perpetually down and feeling useless. Others sin seemingly without conscience because they feel that it’s all been forgiven so why worry. Both positions are wrong.
DAVID’S DOWNWARD SPIRAL OF SIN 2 Samuel 11: 2 -5 David and Bathsheba 2 Samuel 11: 27 It was evil in the sight of the Lord 2 Samuel 12: 7 -15 David confesses. Nathan says this… “The Lord also has taken away your sin; you shall not die. 14 However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die. ””
THE LORD HAS TAKEN AWAY YOUR SIN Romans 3: 25 -26 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; [that’s exactly what 2 Samuel 12: 13 says God did―he passed over David’s sin] 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. David’s faith in God’s mercy and God’s future redeeming work unites David with Christ. And in God’s all-knowing mind, David’s sins are counted as Christ’s sins and Christ’s righteousness is counted as his righteousness, and God justly takes away David’s sin. But there were still consequences…
DAILY RECEIVING FORGIVENESS For those of us who have been saved by our faith in Jesus salvation we should accept what an amazing love that shows for us, love that although we are dirty rotten sinners elevates us out of the resulting depression, fear and feeling useless into a position as sons and daughters of the most high God. That same love should also never be used as an excuse for sin but instead should fuel the fire of our determination to avoid sin at all costs because we love Jesus and don’t want to let him down. Matthew 6 ‘Give us this day our daily bread. 12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

BROKEN HEARTED JOY. CRUSHED BY SIN, REMADE BY GRACE. Being broken and contrite is not against joy and praise and witness. It’s the basis for all Christian joy and praise and witness. So have you been crushed with guilt well? Do you look into Jesus face on the cross and fall to your knees weeping because of the depth of the love that has saved you from destruction? We are crushed to be remade, we have broken hearted joy to drive us forward telling others they need what we have. Being crushed with guilt “well” means you realise what you have gained through Jesus death. Come like David and ask for renewal. Let us be so filled with the joy of the Lord at being saved from sin that sin has no place in our lives anymore. Let us be crushed with guilt well.
