What are Gatsby Benchmarks? The Gatsby Benchmarks are a framework of 8 guidelines about what makes the best careers provision in schools and colleges. The Careers Strategy is built around them, and they are a great place to start for planning or improving your programme. • Originally published in 2014 • 'No magic bullet' - Sir John Holman • Aim for 100% coverage to meet the Benchmark
Why Gatsby? “Good career guidance is the key to social mobility: it is about showing young people - whatever their social and family background - the options open to them, and helping them make the right choices to set them on the right path to rewarding future careers. ” (taken from Good Career Guidance - Reaching the Gatsby Benchmarks)
Gatsby Benchmarks – What do they cover? 1: A stable career – programme 2: Learning from career and labour market information 3: Addressing the needs of each pupil 4: Linking curriculum learning to careers 5: Encounters with employers and employees 6: Experiences of workplaces 7: Encounters with further and higher education 8: Personal guidance
Another way of expressing the Gatsby Benchmarks – putting young people at the heart of the process. The ‘Whole School Careers Programme’ (GBM 1) should form a ‘wrap around’ for all activity
A few points to consider. . . • Strengths and weaknesses - Do you have areas of difficulty with meeting particular Benchmarks? Who can help you? • How do you record interventions for tracking Gatsby/Compass? • Are you using all your activities effectively to meet Gatsby across your whole organisation? • Where appropriate - are you accessing all possible help from Hepp/Hepp. SY and other partners? • Are you accessing support from your Enterprise Coordinator and the CEC?
Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers GBM 4 - what does ‘good’ look like? • All teachers should link curriculum learning to careers • STEM teachers need to highlight relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of careers (would argue this should apply to all subjects!) • All subject teachers stress the importance of succeeding in Maths and English • Schools should adopt a strategic approach to embedding careers in subject learning
GBM 4 – how can you achieve ‘good’? • National Careers Week (NCW) usually in March provides a focus for departmental activities that can be sustained • Useful NCW materials can form a basis for displays and subject focus that can be further developed • Use of sector organisations such as the STEM Centre can provide resources and expertise • Senior Leadership Team support is key to success • Use the ‘Shape Your Future’ brochure to look at work sectors – maps across to several subjects. Encourage students to do research on a sector/subject basis and links to career pathways
Specifics - Compass questions • What proportion of students have experienced curriculum learning that highlights the relevance of their subject to future career paths? • English • Maths • Science • PSHE
Remember - Ofsted framework! September 2019 – Common Inspection Framework (CIF) Good Descriptor states: “Secondary schools. . . use the Gatsby Benchmarks to develop and improve their careers provision and enable a range of education and training providers to speak to pupils. . . all pupils receive unbiased information about potential next steps and high-quality careers guidance. The school provides goodquality, meaningful opportunities for pupils to encounter the world of work. ”
