Main Idea A variety of critics pointed out the shortcomings of the New Deal, as well as its potential for restricting individual freedom.

 • Women: • the NRA codes permitted lower wages for women’s work. •

• Women: • the NRA codes permitted lower wages for women’s work. • In relief jobs men & boys were given preference • No New Deal laws protected domestic service • African-Americans: • New Deal reinforced social segregation • No person of color received a job at a professional level • Paid less than white counterparts, did not work on dam or electrical projects • Social Security Act • Excluded nearly 2/3 of working African-Americans who were farmers or domestic workers.
