“Life was good/before I/met the monster/After, life was great, /At least/for a little while” (314). Kristina, the main character in the novel Glass, thinks she can stay in control as she experiments with different drugs, but before long she finds herself caught in the destructive grip of addiction, unable to free herself. The raw edginess of this story is masterfully captured in the poetic form common in the novels of Ellen Hopkins, who writes about the dark struggles that face teens. Tragic twists turns, striking word choice and realistic characters bring this story to life.

Kayla loses loved ones, including her parents because of the barcode. Kayla faces many difficult situation and has no choice, but to run for her life. Kayla Reed is soon to be seventeen, which means she is required to get the barcode tattoo, a new way for the government to keep track of it’s citizens. The tattoo is permanently inked on your wrist and contains every piece of information about you: your date of birth, medical records, family history, and much more. Because of the barcode, Kayla loses loved ones, including her parents, and faces many difficult situations, leaving her with no choice, but to run for her life.
