Self-portrait (The Desperate Man), Gustave Courbet was a famous French painter in the nineteenth-century. He was a realist painter and he painted lots of self-portraits. Courbet occupies an important place in 19 th century French painting as an innovator. He put so much of himself onto the canvas. In one self-portrait, he is long-haired and delicate. In another, he tears his hair, wide-eyed and wild, like Johnny Depp’s pirate. In “Self-Portrait with Pipe” we see him as a thoughtful dreamer.

Empathy • Empathy is the ability to identify with a place or person • You are going to use the painting as the basis for a piece of empathy writing. • Look at the painting again and consider the accompanying questions. • Use the First Person (I, my. . . )

Task-You now need to write as if you are the man in the picture. . . . How are you feeling? Why? What is your state of mind? Where have you been? What happened? What can you hear? How does that make you feel?

Plenary Self Assessment: Selected pupils read pieces of empathy writing. How have they effectively showed empathy? Empathy is the ability to identify with a place or person. Identify three places where you have done this well and write a supporting comment.
