Self-portrait (The Desperate Man), Gustave Courbet was a famous French painter in the nineteenth-century. He was a realist painter and he painted lots of self-portraits. Courbet occupies an important place in 19 th century French painting as an innovator. He put so much of himself onto the canvas. In one self-portrait, he is long-haired and delicate. In another, he tears his hair, wide-eyed and wild, like Johnny Depp’s pirate. In “Self-Portrait with Pipe” we see him as a thoughtful dreamer.
