What will I study on a Diploma in Criminology? WHY SHOULD I STUDY THIS COURSE? Criminology is the scientific study of crime and criminals. • Ever thought why different people commit different crimes? • Why do serial killers commit crime? • Why do some people report crime and others don’t? • How much does the media influence our perception of crime? • How do psychology and sociology explain crime? • What happens during a criminal investigation? • Who decides what laws to make? • How do judges decide on the appropriate punishment for a criminal? Criminology @ Lowestoft Sixth Form (This course is equivalent to an A level) Year One Unit 1: Changing Awareness of Crime. Unit 2: Criminological Theories. An internal controlled assessment. A 90 minute examination on Unit 2. Year Two Unit 3: Crime Scene to Courtroom. Unit 4: Crime and Punishment. An internal controlled assessment. A 90 minute examination on Unit 4.
Criminology @ Lowestoft Sixth Form What will I study on in Criminology? Year 1 You will understand how crime reporting affects the public perception of criminality. You will realise how campaigns are used to elicit change and plan and design a campaign for change relating to crime. You will understand social constructions, theories and causes of criminality and a knowledge of the causes of policy change. Year 2 Understand the process of criminal investigations, the prosecution of suspects, and how to review criminal cases. You will learn about different processes of the criminal justice system and the role of punishment and social control measures in the UK.
Criminology @ Lowestoft Sixth Form Your course: The course will provide the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills to allow you to progress to further study and training. It is relevant to many jobs within the criminal justice sector, including the police, probation service, prison and rehabilitation service, social workers and other legal professions. With critical thinking, analytical and communication skills, criminology graduates are also attractive to employers outside the criminal justice sector in areas such as social research and politics.
