CRIME FILM
Plot This crime film is about a young eighteen year old girl called Hazel, she is an above average student who has a connection to social media and the internet. She writes her own blog which focuses on local crimes as she reports about the details surrounding the crime. One crime in particular that she is focused on is the burglary of a local elderly woman’s house. Multiple times she attempts to interview the woman as well as contacting police as she thinks that her neighbours committed the crime. She begins to closely monitor her neighbours and finds out that her hypothesis is true. She tells the police and they are subsequently arrested. Due to her observation skills she is hired to work as a detective to the police and follow the story as a modern day Sherlock Holmes. She solves many different crimes and moves to New York City to solve a serial killer case, but the film continuously shows the prejudice against her being so young.
Types of characters- Hazel (protagonist) Hazel is a student who worked a normal day job and used her blog in her free time to investigate crimes. She is 18 years old and is part of a middle class family household. She lives in a sub-urban household with her mother, father and sister but due to her intelligence her family want her to become a doctor, however she wants to be a detective. There are often scenes of her hanging out with her childhood best friend Stephen, who supports her becoming a detective but refuses to let her move to New York City alone.
Types of characters- Stephen is a 19 year old who is best friends with Hazel. They worked together at their old job and he moved to New York City with her. Stephen tries to help Hazel solve crimes by being the ‘tech whiz’. There are many scenes of them hanging out talking about different crimes and they both become invested in the ‘New York Killer’ case. After moving to New York, Stephen becomes more distant with his family and begins to work on his education at the University.
Types of characters- Maxwell (antagonist) Maxwell is a lower-middle class man in his late 40’s who works as Hazel’s boss in the detective career. He repeatedly attempts to bring her down on her cases and lead her in the wrong directions because of the prejudice against her age working in a professional environment. He also tries throughout the film to generate media attention towards Hazel for every mistake she makes. There are few scenes of Maxwell outside of his office portraying his isolation from everyone else.
How does the film tackle a social, cultural or political issue? The film tackles the issue of the representations of young people and their capabilities. Multiple times the media targets Hazel specifically because of her age and not her intelligence. The film demonstrates a strong female main character as well as her being above other people in authority. She represents a role model to the younger audience by taking her work seriously as well as a message to older audiences that you shouldn’t be quick to judge the younger generation.
