Cricket is an English national game. It is known that people played cricket in England as early as 1550. It is believed that cricket was originally a children's game but adults started playing it. Francis Cotes, The Young Cricketer, 1768

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players. It is played on a cricket field. There is a rectangular 22 -yard-long pitch with wickets (воротца)in the centre of the field. A bat and a ball A pitch and wickets

The play begins when a member of a team, known as the bowler (подающий мяч), delivers the ball from one end of the pitch to the other, towards a set of wooden stumps (wicket).

In front of wickets stands one of the batsmen (отражающий битой мяч), known as the striker. The striker's role is to prevent the ball from hitting the wicket through use of his bat, and strike it well and far enough to score runs (заработать очки). The other batsman, known as the non-striker, waits at the opposite end of the pitch by the bowler.

The bowler's intention is to both prevent the scoring of runs (не дать заработать очки) and to dismiss the batsman, at which point the dismissed batsman has to leave the field another teammate replaces him at the crease (черта).
