1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? • The genre of my film is drama/romance. In this genre there is typically a love interest of some sort, usually involving the lead actor. In our opening scene, the character Emma Wilson which was played by me, walks past the lead in the train station. He doesn’t notice her, but she notices him. The introduction of these two characters is crucial to reinforce the cliché “boy meets girl”.
• However, The love story here challenges the traditional cliché “boy meets girl” because it is Emma who introduces herself to Connor, not the other way around. Also, in movies where the lead actor/ actress is trying to become famous usually there is a male figure as the talent agent/manager. We used a female to represent the talent agent/manager to challenge this idea. Emma is portrayed as a little flirty from the beginning when she takes two looks at Connor. Her interest in him is not genuine, she and the future fame will lead to the destruction of the Connor’s morals. This is why I chose the word Dream in the title American Dream to be in black font as a way to foreshadow his dream becoming a nightmare.
2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text? • The opening of the film, I think is very cheerful which would make the romantics stay to watch the remaining of the film. And those who like the drama will stay interested because they know that every good drama starts out sweet and soon becomes bitter.
• If I were to distribute this film, I would first try to submit it through a big production company and have them distribute and market the film. Later I would sell it to an online distributor like Netflix so that it would increase revenue and the amount of viewers.
3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project? • Personally filming was not difficult for me, the hardest part of the process for me was the editing. It is a very tedious job, and I have a lot of respect for movie editors, because they make it look easy. I learned how to control the sounds in the film, how to trim shots and how to incorporate transitions into the film.
4. How did you integrate technologies. Software, hardware, and online- in this project? • We used a video camera for the filming. For the editing software we used Pinnacle. The internet was used to do mostly all of our research. We even used a Power. Point online so that we could all edit it and put the link on our blogs.
