Creating Your Breakthrough Year What Does it Mean
Creating Your Breakthrough Year!
What Does it Mean to Create Your Breakthrough Year? A “Breakthrough” is creating, accomplishing, or experiencing something that you previously thought was NOT possible for yourself. This doesn’t always have to be an increase in growth or income. Maybe your breakthrough last year was getting over your fear of doing live videos, and finally having the confidence to put yourself out there more. Maybe it was cutting out a toxic relationship that was holding you back in your business. It could have been you finally getting clear on the fact that you do have value to offer the people on your team in terms of your leadership. I want you to ask yourself. . What breakthroughs did you experience this past year in your business and your life?
Creating Your Breakthrough Year Now, how are we going to get even more breakthroughs in the coming year? 4 Steps For Creating Your Breakthrough Year - Step 1: Get to the Root of Your Identity Step 2: Adopt an Abundance Mindset Step 3: Complete The Past Step 4: Set Your Breakthrough Goals
Setting Goals FACT: Studies show that 92% of people that set goals/resolutions fail within the first 3 weeks of setting them. The question: WHY? Most people try and set goals from the top down. That’s why they fail… They set goals based off of their environment and their behavior. There all different kinds of goals: you've got business goals, relationship goals, & personal goals, but all goals that you set are based on your identity. They are rooted in how you truly view yourself based on your current thinking, your beliefs about yourself, your behaviors and your actions. But here’s the thing: “Who you are is defined by the next decision you make, not the last one. ”
Get to the Root of Your Identity The reason why most people fail when it comes to their business goals: they set goals for outcomes that are inconsistent with their identity. Your physical environment will always correspond to your INTERNAL environment The stories you tell yourself on the inside will always determine who you are on the outside For example: if you are poor in your mind / it’s hard for me to make money. . . you’ll never make the money that you want to make What identity do you currently have that is holding you back?
Get to the Root of Your Identity Here’s an example of how this works: Most people set goals for outcomes that are inconsistent with their identity - Ex: I’m going to make $100 k this year, but if you’ve only made $30 k in your business before, then that’s your IDENTITY Most people set goals for behaviors never considering what CHARACTERISTICS they would need in order to achieve what they say they want. - Ex: I’m going to message 30 people a day/ work my business 5 days a week Ask yourself, what are the characteristics - the abilities, the skills, the talents, the knowledge, the competencies that we need to change.
Get to the Root of Your Identity Success is not a matter of doing, it's a matter of character. Most people never think about who they need to be in order to achieve my goals. You have to peel back these layers. What identity would you need to have in order for you to make the $60, 000? What identity would you need to have in order for you to make the $100, 000? What identity would you have if you already made 6 figures +? THAT is where you need to start.
Get to the Root of Your Identity HAVE - DO - BE vs. BE - DO - HAVE Most people practice ‘Have - Do - Be’ ex. If I HAVE more money , I can DO something different and BE more successful. This is the same mindset as “when i hit that rank i’ll be a leader” or “ when i hit that rank i’ll start leading calls” and following that formula, you’ll never get what you want. . . that’s starting from the top down. Here’s what you should be doing. . . ‘Be - Do - Have’ Who do I need to be, to do what I need to do, to have the success that I want? Being always precedes doing. . . you can only do what you ARE.
Adopting The Mindset You Need to Set Your Goals Step 2 - Adopt an Abundance Mindset One of the biggest reasons we don’t achieve our goals, we don’t BELIEVE that we can. What kind of adjustments could you make to your thinking to change your sense of what’s possible? Most people approach their goals from a scarcity mindset. They approach challenges and problems assuming defeat and view their abilities as being set in stone i. e. , I can’t lead a potential call b/c I’m not comfortable speaking to the camera, I’m not good at talking to new people, or I’m not good at public speaking Scarcity thinkers approach obstacles as roadblocks. Abundance thinkers approach obstacles from the mindset of ‘I’ll find another solution’.
Adopting The Mindset You Need to Set Your Goals Let’s talk about setting goals. . When setting your goals this year focus on is adopting an Abundance Mindset. When creating your goals you must learn to stop operating from your current CIRCUMSTANCES, and to instead create your goals from POSSIBILITIES. Don't let your current situation or who you are today limit you setting goals for yourself this year. When we set goals from our circumstances, from what's around us, with a mindset of limitation, we wind up setting goals that limit ourselves. Make the decision to adopt an Abundance Mindset when it comes to your goals for this year.
Adopting The Mindset You Need to Set Your Goals The problem is that we doubt our own ability. We say things like: I would love to double my income this year, but I don't have the time. I'd have to work so much harder to make that happen. That is an example of a limiting belief. . . and you setting goals from your CURRENT CIRCUMSTANCES. You need to start saying: How can I find the time to double my income? OR How can I double my income without spending double the time? That's what it means to set goals from possibilities. What limiting beliefs do you have about yourself that is keeping you from setting the kind of goals that will excite and inspire you? Ex: i don’t have enough time, i don’t know enough people, i’m not good at sales, I’m
Completing The Past Step 3 - Complete Your 2019 Before we move into actually setting your goals, we need to take one more very important step. You must take some time reflecting BACKWARDS before you can move effectively into the future. You need to complete the past before you can build for the future. Thinking backwards helps you learn from your past and allows you to positively impact the future. When you take the time to do this, you start to realize that some of your greatest disappointments of last year can actually lead you to your greatest opportunities of this year.
Completing The Past Look at last year and answer the following questions. . . 1. How would you grade your performance of your business last year? 2. What did you accomplish that you were most proud of? 3. What disappointments or regrets did you experience this past year? 4. What major lessons did you learn last year? Take some time right now to answer these questions and FOCUS on including the feelings and emotions that are associated with these answers.
Completing The Past Now let’s talk about something called the “The Opportunity Principle” The Opportunity Principle states that we feel regret the strongest where the opportunity for improvement is the greatest. There have been a lot of studies done on regret and what they found is. . . Your feelings of dissatisfaction and disappointment are the strongest where the chances for corrective action are the clearest. There's a reason why you feel that disappointment… deep down inside, you know that is the thing that you need to be focusing on more. Our biggest regrets actually point forward to our greatest possibilities. If we can learn to identify the areas we regret the most, it cues us into our best future opportunities.
Completing The Past “The wisdom of your past will give you the experience and the knowledge that you need to build the future that you want. ” Here's what a lot of us don't do. We never take the time to reflect back and express appreciation and gratitude for what we did do. It's so easy for us to just focus on what we didn't. Don't get sucked into that negative energy anymore. Instead, acknowledge what happened, experience the emotions associated with that regret or disappointment, and begin to define a plan for a better future. Reframe the way that you look at that regret and use it as the foundation for you creating a better future for yourself. Look back to your answers to the questions for last year, and understand these are
Creating Your Breakthrough Goals Step 4 - Creating Your ‘Breakthrough Goals for 2019’ Breakthrough Goals: goals that are rooted in something that is much more powerful than the normal process of setting resolutions Imagine it’s already December 31 st of this year. You’re reflecting back on the year that you just had. And you’re going to answer 4 questions relating to your breakthrough goals for this year. There are 3 main areas of goal setting in your life and as you go through these questions, keep these areas of focus in mind: 1. Yourself 2. Your Relationships 3. Your Business
Goal Setting Question number 1. . . What did I do, create, experience, or accomplish in 2020 in order to declare this a breakthrough year? How much money would you need to make to feel freedom in your life? To truly consider this a breakthrough year for your business? What specific impact do you want to make with your business, in what way do you want to help and empower other people? What is that one rank that really excites you? You all know what that one rank is for you - the one that scares you to say out loud! What's that one rank that you really want to hit? What other things could you think of or come up with that would truly make you consider this to be YOUR year. . What would excite or inspire you?
Goal Setting Remember, create from POSSIBILITIES, not your current circumstances. Don’t limit yourself with scarcity thinking or limiting beliefs. Here’s how the process should work: 1. Start out by brain dumping ideas for goals in each of the 3 areas for the next 12 months 2. Next, highlight the most important and exciting ones that stand out in each of the 3 areas 3. Finally, go through the list and narrow it down the top 7 - 10 goals that really light you on fire and get you most excited!
Goal Setting Start with yourself: your goals in terms of your spirituality and growth, goals in terms of your physical health or your wellness, your skill sets and your development in terms of your leadership. Then, move into your relationships and business: do you have experiences, places that you want to go, charities that you want to donate to, maybe you want to start a blog or a new project. And where do you want your business to go in 2020? I want you to look at these goals and get really freaking excited about them! You've created these goals from possibilities. Some of you are going to start doubting yourselves and say yeah, but how am I going to make this happen? Let that go right now, that's certainty, let it go. Just start from here.
Smart Goals vs. Heart Goals Smart goals need to be specific, measurable, and achievable. However smart goals are missing something. The missing part is heart Take each of your goals and add an additional layer of why is this goal important to you. You want to connect your goals to your bigger purpose and meaning so that it matters to you that much more. . . When you do this, you WILL follow through! Ask yourself, ‘WHY does this goal matter to you? ’
Smart Goals vs. Heart Goals Now, add this component to each of your 7 - 10 goals. . . Ex: I want to make 5 K/month in 2020 vs. I want to make 5 K/month in 2020 so that i can quit my job and be there for my children! OR I want to pay off all my credit card debt in 2020 vs. I want to pay off all my credit card debt in 2020 so that i can finally start to save more and help my parents pay off their mortgage. This makes your goals less about you and more about the other people in your life and the impact that you can make which makes you more likely to follow through.
Goal Setting Question number 2. . Having accomplished all of this, what did I do differently in 2020? - This is a very powerful question to ask yourself. Look back to those biggest regrets and disappointments of last year and identify those areas of opportunity for your greatest improvements. What actions or behaviors did you do differently this year to produce those results? Question number 3. . What did I have to let go of? - Really spend some time thinking about what this would be for you. Remember to operate from possibilities, really imagine this being your year, and think about what you need to let go of this year.
Goal Setting Ex: I needed to let go of my need to feel in control all of the time, and being willing to venture into the world of uncertainty and become more vulnerable. I only did things that I thought I could reasonably predict the outcome for and that I thought would go my way or that I would look good doing. I had to let go of certainty. I needed to let go of my expectations, and trade them for appreciation. I had to finally allow life to just happen. I needed to let go of my story that I kept telling myself that I didn’t have anything valuable to offer other people, and that they wouldn’t care what I had to say. . ”
Goal Setting Question number 4. . Who did i need to BE in order to hit my goals? Words have so much power. Words can build or words can destroy. Words can lift someone up, or tear someone down. Start paying attention to the language that you're using about yourself. Start brainstorming some words around who you needed to be in order to create everything that you said that you did. You're sitting there December 31 st, saying to yourself: this is the person that I am today that allowed me to have all of what is in front of me. This is where you create the IDENTITY you need to be in order to achieve your
Goal Setting Who did you need to become? Brainstorm some words and pay attention to the ones that emotionally hit home for you. . . Ex: Committed, Unstoppable, Disciplined, Consistent, Passionate, Joyful, Resilient, Grateful, Confident, Determined, Loving, Inspired, Confident. . . “Only word off limits - “fearless”. Stop trying to be fearless because that doesn't exist. Courageous is what you needed to be. Courageous means feeling the fear and doing it anyway, not letting fear control you and keep you playing small. After you’ve taken some time to brainstorm the different words, narrow it down to the top 4 that really resonate with you the most. Pick words that you really believe that if you could just be these 4 things for the entire year of 2020, this would be your best year.
Goal Setting These 4 words are going to play an important role in helping you shift your identity. TIP: Your new life is going to cost your old one. The person that you are today is not going to get you to where you want to go, It doesn't mean that you're not good enough, or you're broken - none of you are broken. You just have some broken patterns of thoughts, habits, and behaviors that are masking your true self. You need to learn how to start breaking through that and realize that at some point you just made up who you are, and it hasn't been serving you… So why not make something up that actually serves you, that empowers you to finally create the business and the life of your dreams.
The Process Ex: For me, I had to be someone that wouldn’t accept playing small in my business and my life any longer. I had to be someone that was focused on serving others, and not selfishly focused on my own fears and insecurities. I had to be someone that knew I had value to offer others and operate from the knowledge that I did have worth and that my life mattered. I had to be someone that was responsible for the energy that I was bringing into the tasks that I did every day and let go of the excuses I was making for why I couldn’t do certain things. And I had to be courageous. . . move forward despite my fears, taking massive action towards my goals not being afraid to fail. What would this be for you?
Take Action As you're sitting here answering these questions, I want you to take ACTION. TIP: I don't want you to be sitting there at your computer and just having accomplished all of these, what I do differently in 2020. I want you to stand up and I want you to say having accomplished all of this, what did I do differently in 2020. I want you to keep asking yourself that question over and over again. Here's what I've learned: the physical body controls the mind. If you can change your state, you can change your mind, you can open yourself up for things that you normally would not have gotten.
Take Action The first step to you making this your breakthrough year is your willingness to go through this process and really get clarity on what you need to DO, FOCUS ON, and BECOME to achieve your goals. Keep the answers to these questions visible to you at all times, look at them every single day, and make sure you TAKE ACTION. RIGHT AWAY!!!! Law of Diminishing Intent says that the longer you wait to take action on something, the less likely you will be to ever do it. If you want this to be your breakthrough year you must be willing to take ACTION immediately.
