WHAT IS SOCIAL MAPPING? • Traditional maps show location of physical features: Roads, buildings, schools etc. • Social mapping brings “use” or social factors into the map: Community halls, central communities, soccer pitch used by young men. • Social maps are not just about marking location, but talking to the community to learn how they use the space.

BACKGROUND • HIV prevalence in Zimbabwe remains high. • Young people are not keen to access Sexual Reproductive Health Services from routine health facilities. • CHIEDZA is offering young people SRH services in the community. • To maximise engagement with young people we needed to know when and where to find them.

METHODS Four Intervention CHIEDZA Clusters in Harare • Mapped over a period of 10

METHODS Four Intervention CHIEDZA Clusters in Harare • Mapped over a period of 10 weeks (May –July 2019). • Paper maps, produced using Field. Papers. org, and the android application MAPS. ME were used to collect information • Mapping was split into three distinct sections

CHALLENGES • Name tags were a challenge to wear in some communities. • Young

CHALLENGES • Name tags were a challenge to wear in some communities. • Young people were sometimes not comfortable to talk to us with our tablets in hand so we had to hide and write notes afterwards. • Some places were not safe to reach e. g illegal dealers. • Refusing to give information • Wrong information given as some places were non existent places.

CONCLUSION • Social mapping is an important tool in getting to know communities •

CONCLUSION • Social mapping is an important tool in getting to know communities • The combination of paper maps, android applications such as MAPS. ME provide simple and efficient ways to produce social maps. • Areas were young people hang out were identified and can go on to be utilised during mobilisation activities • Other service providers can be identified , these may collaborate with CHIEDZA
