CREATING PAPER BAG PUPPETS AMIE FUJIWARA GRADE 1
CREATING PAPER BAG PUPPETS! AMIE FUJIWARA GRADE 1
HOW WILL WE MAKE PAPER BAG PUPPETS? FIRST GRADE STUDENTS WILL LEARN TO CREATE HAND PUPPETS BY TAKING ORDINARY BROWN PAPER LUNCH BAGS AND TRANSFORMING THEM INTO PUPPETS USING CONSTRUCTION PAPER, COLORED TISSUSE PAPER, GLUE, GLITTER, AND MARKERS OR CRAYPAS. FOR THIS LESSON, WE WILL BE FOCUSING ON CREATING OCEAN ANIMAL PUPPETS. THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL THEY WILL USE WILL BE THEIR IMAGINATION AS THEY DECIDE HOW THEY ARE GOING TO TRANSFORM THEIR PLAIN, BROWN PAPER BAGS INTO EXCITING, EYE-CATCHING OCEAN CREATURES.
PUPPET LIFE UNDER THE SEA
THINKING OUTSIDE THE BAG: WHAT DO WE NEED TO IMAGINE AND VISUALIZE BEFORE WE BEGIN OUR “CREATURECREATING”? WHAT CREATURES DO YOU IMAGINE LIVE UNDER THE SEA? HOW CAN WE TRANSFORM OUR PAPER BAG INTO THE CREATURE WE WANT? WHAT MATERIALS WILL WE NEED TO USE? HOW WILL WE APPLY THE MATERIALS WE’VE CHOSEN ONTO THE BAG? WHAT COLORS DO WE ENVISION OUR CREATURE TO BE? WHAT FEATURES DO WE NEED TO GIVE THEM? GILLS? TENTACLES? A MOUTH?
UNDERSTANDING HOW TO CONCEPTUALIZE AND CREATE A UNIQUE WORK OF ART OUT OF A BLANK CANVAS: WHEN CREATING ARTWORK FROM A BLANK CANVAS, BEGIN WITH VISUALIZATION. ASK YOURSELF, WHAT FORM DO I WANT IT TO TAKE, WHAT COLORS DO I WANT IT TO BE, WHAT FEATURES WILL I NEED TO ADD? USING YOUR IMAGINATION ALONG WITH TRYING DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES AND MEDIA WILL LET YOU CREATE YOUR OWN UNIQUE ART PIECE.
PUPPETS TO PUPPET SHOW: A SERIES OF ART PRODUCTION EXPERIENCES LESSON #2: SETTING THE STAGE Each student will create their own “ocean-life” scenery on a large piece of white construction paper using the same materials they used for their puppets. Each piece will be glued to a large piece of cardboard that will be used as the backdrop for…. LESSON #3 THE PUPPET SHOW The students will create a puppet show using their amazing hand-crafted paper bag puppets. They will perform in groups of 2 -3 for about 3 minutes per group. They will be able to write their own “script”, giving life and personality to their puppets as they interact with one another on stage. This will be a good way to introduce them to performing arts, and to exhibit their creative arts for an audience.
