Cave formations - Do you know your stalactites and stalagmites? How do they form? How long do they take to form? What are they made of?
The formation of cave decorations (speleothems) Limestone is mainly made of calcite. When water containing dissolved calcium and carbonate reaches the cave ceiling, some of the calcium and carbonate is left behind as calcite, forming cave decorations such as stalactites. Stalactites have formed along joint lines in the limestone where water has seeped through.
