What Questions Did We Have?
What Questions Did We Have? Q In demonstrating evidence of impact and influence of responsibly leading, managing or organising programmes, subjects and/or disciplinary areas. . Is the 'quantity' of the team led/managed factored in as a measure of success/impact? For example Will a D 3 applicant that has been a Programme Leader have a stronger chance of success than a D 3 applicant that has successfully led a Team of two to five academics at module level across a range of modules and student cohorts?
What Questions Did We Have? Q How can other support roles such as being a Beacon assessor and mentor be factored into a D 3 application as evidence for D 3 VII? Should this reflection go in within one of the two case studies or within the sections A 1 to A 5 where relevant?
What Questions Did We Have?
D 3: VII Formal o co-ordination and evaluation of …… initiatives (eg. Programme / module design, induction, structure of the academic year, learner support, learning spaces, rollout of online marking etc) o leading innovations in teaching and learning which influence the practice of others (whether 1: 1, small or large group of colleagues) o leading projects, research, strategic targets/aims which have contributed to enhanced student learning or support
D 3: VII Formal / Informal o the development of PGT/PGR students in their teaching role, through supervision o co-ordinating support teams in projects that enhance learner support – student partnerships, peer assisted learning, student mentors
D 3: VII Informal o coaching and mentoring of new and existing staff – Beacon – Working to support the development of a learning design that incorporates Careers / Library / Technology / Language Support o developing and implementing resources , induction, learner guides and study skills support across departments, Schools and Colleges etc o active participation and contribution to approval, validation and enhancement processes
Case Study May Emerge From…
Let’s Do Some D 3 vii Writing…
Theme / Topic o What are you most passionate about right now? Or o Take list the first item off your
1. Describe your Influence D 3 vii o Who was / were influenced? o How were they influenced? o What did they change / what was reinforced (e. g. belief, knowledge, practice)? o Provide evidence of this impact – Students / Colleagues / External / Numbers
2. Reflect o What strategies did you use to influence others? (e. g. persuasion, sharing evidence, funding, guidance, modelling, and research) o Why did the strategies work? How might your approach to influence have been even better? o How does your influence link to existing research (V 3) / current trends / institutional strategies (V 4) / codes of practice (K 6) ?
Structural Stuff
A. Overall Potential Structure a) Describe the activity and an outline of the rationale b) Consider what worked well and what not so well in practice c) Identify what you learnt being involving in this activity and note any changes to your prior assumptions
B. Overall Potential Structure d) Describe the impact but ensure that impact points to sources of evidence – student / colleague / external feedback are all ok e) Describe what the next steps might be to advance this area of practice even further f) Clearly address throughout (in at least one case study) your D 3 vii influence – upsell your awesomeness, what you did and why!
Writing Examples
Writing Example o. I led a module team of five people (D 3. vii) No! o You need to be explicit and demonstrate how you have successfully co-ordinated, supported, supervised, managed and/or mentored others in relation to teaching and learning.
A “Fabulous” Case Study Paragraph As a programme leader I led and co-ordinated a team of 15 colleagues. This involved regular team meetings and communications to ensure a consistent approach to teaching (D 3: VII). I Ied the curriculum design of the programme and met with the teaching team initially to outline expectations in terms of quality assurance (K 6). I guided and supported the team in small groups to consider the programme outcomes (D 3: VII) and how these relate to the module outcomes, learning activities and assessment taking into account the concept of constructive alignment (Biggs and Tang, 2007) (V 3). I then encouraged the team to work in independent groups on their modules and offered support in terms of sharing ideas and thoughts. Staff appreciated the support and one commented ‘I appreciate you being on hand to ask questions and your advice on changing the assessment was really helpful, thank you. ’ (K 5)
