OTHERING AND CURRICULUM • What do we mean by erasure? • Dr. Nathaniel Dett, Hampton College, wrote concert spiritual arrangements, but Acting Director of Hampton College, George Phenix, wrote to Dr. Dett and requested that the choir sing spirituals “in the same manner that they would sing them if they had come together by chance in South Carolina or some other place, that the contrast between them and the other songs on the program would be striking. ” The administrators did not understand why he set the spirituals as a separate set from concert music, holding applause and maintaining a solemn atmosphere.
