Reward System • Hurricash replaces Gotchas from last year • They are tickets that students receive from staff members when a child is observed following school expectations. • They will be able to use these tickets at a special school store. • Trimester Incentives • Compliment Party
English Language Arts Reading: Literature (Asking Questions, Retell stories, Story Elements) Informational Text (Main Topic, Text Features) Foundational Skills (Phonics & Word recognition, Fluency) Writing: Type (opinion, informative text, narratives) Production and Distribution of Writing (Writing Process) Research to build present knowledge Speaking and Listening: Comprehension and Collaboration (Learning through conversation) Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas (Tell a story, presentation) • “Accountable Talk” • Language: Conventions of Standard English (Grammar, Vocabulary) • • •
Reading • Focus on reading strategies such as predicting and previewing, connecting, summarizing, questioning, inferring, and visualizing • Critical thinking through book analysis • CAFÉ/Daily 5 • Variety of genres (fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, etc • Thoughtful Log (my thinking, powerful words and phrases, strategies and genres) • Uses both the basal and authentic literature • Read Aloud/Shared Reading/Flexible Reading Groups/Literacy Stations • Poetry every week – rhyme, rhythm, alliterations
Writing Students write in ALL subjects! • Students will continue to learn sentence structure and development. • Students will learn about the writing process. (prewriting, draft, edit, revise and publish) • Types of writing- opinion pieces, informative/explanatory texts, and narratives

Handwriting • We use Zaner-Bloser handwriting • Review print in the first trimester • Begin cursive in January
Math Our Day • Whole Group first half • Guided Math • Work Stations: – Technology – Math Vocabulary – Applying through games – Number work – Problem Solving – Xtra Math
Math Continued Lessons- all five modalities • Manipulatives/Tools • Real-life Situations • Oral/Written Language • Written Symbols • Pictures/Graphs Students will explore: v Operations and Algebraic thinking v Number and operations in base 10 v Measurement and Data v Geometry v Homework – approximately 2 -4 times a week
Library Media Center • Checkout is on Thursdays • May return book earlier if finished and check out a new book • Students actively working - not the typical quiet library
Science Amplify Science Three units – one for each trimester • Plant and Animal Relationship • Changing Landforms • Properties of Materials Inquiry Based - Essential Questions - and then test different ways to answer the question
Social Studies Communities • Government - Explain what governments are and some of their functions (e. g. making and enforcing laws, protecting citizens, and collecting taxes). • Rules and Laws - Describe how communities work to accomplish common tasks, establish responsibilities, and fulfill roles of authority. Geography – • Construct and interpret maps and other graphic representations of both familiar and unfamiliar places. Economics and Financial Literacy – • Demonstrate how our choices can affect ourselves and others in positive and negative ways. • Explain that money can be saved or spent on goods and services. Second Step – Social Emotional • Responsibility • Empathy
Homework • 2 -4 math homework assignments will be sent home each week • Reading log – Due on Fridays (Mondays) • Work not finished during the day may be sent home to be completed at home. • Other homework will be sent home on an as-needed basis for extra practice.
Special Classes P. E. is every day. Besides P. E. students will also have the following special classes: Monday – Art Tuesday – PLTW and Music Wednesday – Thursday – Library Friday – PLTW and Music
Community Meeting • Meets every Monday in the gym • Establishes a sense of community among students at Hillcrest • Character Education is taught • Awards are given for specials to encourage good behavior (Golden Gym Shoe, Toot Your Own Horn, Bus, etc)
Grading Standard Based Report Cards • Similar to First Grade Format • 3 - Meeting the standard 2 - Approaching the standard 1 - Needs extra help working towards the standard
