Create your own sound bag For this activity
Create your own sound bag!
For this activity, you will need… Lots of objects that begin with two different letters, e. g. ‘s’ and ‘a’. You could use: a sock, a slipper, a spoon, soap, an apple, an animal, an ant, etc. See what you have in your home!
You will also need… A bag or box to put your items in.
Now put all your items inside your bag/box and you have a sound bag! • Can you pull an item out, one at a time, and say the sound that the item begins with? • Can you sort them into two piles/hoops – those that begin with ‘s’ and those that begin with ‘a’? • If you decide to try two different letters, try and choose one long sound that you can extend, e. g. ‘sssss’ or ‘mmmmmm’ and one short sound, e. g. ‘d’ or ‘p’. This difference will help your child hear the initial sounds more easily.
Challenges! • Can you put more than two sounds in your bag? What about 4 or 5 different sounds? Try finding objects in your house that begin with ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’, ‘p’, ‘i’ or ‘n’. These are the first six letters children will learn in Reception. See if you can then sort them into hoops. • Can you match the object to the written letter? Introduce what some letters look like and see if your child can match the objects to the letter. Can you have a go at writing the letter yourself? • See if you can make a silly sentence with the objects, once you’ve sorted them. For example, ‘the stripy, silly snake had a slipper and a sock’!
