CREAM Thermal Subsystem Thermal Model Status Model Statistics
CREAM Thermal Subsystem • Thermal Model Status – Model Statistics (as of 10/31/02) Apex/CAP UTP Payload CDM ISS/Instrument
CREAM Thermal Subsystem • Recent Thermal Model Developments – Science • Moved GAK box to anti-sun side of payload • Currently implementing new S 2 detector design – CDM • Implemented ‘exterior’ box layout from foam/tape mock-up – Follow-on iterations included reorienting flight computers, adding iridium system (and 2 nd phone), rotator/CAP/UTP power relay box was deleted and power redistributed, board-level detail has been added as available • Significant changes and numerous iterations in ‘interior’ configuration – Power system design was delayed and components were oversized, CDM structure had to be stretched to accommodate components, components were resized and reconfigured so structure could be returned to original size. – Removable power tray design was implemented, hard drive supports designed to exclude them from removable tray – Critical function battery design was delayed and was recently designed in thermal model as a ‘first-cut’ until further details are available – Payload in general • • Transferred motor drivers from CDM to HGA Antenna support structure Implemented PV array attachment (to ISS) design
CREAM Thermal Subsystem • Other Recent Thermal Developments – Coordinated with Mission Manager and I&T PDL to develop an initial release of the system-level thermal vacuum test plan – Made progress toward publication of the Thermal ICD and Implementation Plan – Performed convection calculations to determine heat dissipation rates for various components where that information cannot be obtained otherwise – Worked with Payload Systems Engineer and Ballooncraft Manager on survival mode implementation, as well as heaters, thermostats, and relays (quantity, placement, and implementation scheme) • Upcoming Progress Expected – Currently preparing question list for PDLs to solicit component configuration details – Configuration details will be implemented into thermal model and simulations performed, temperature and heater power predictions generated – Complete Thermal ICD and Implementation Plan by mid-November – Thermal peer review will be conducted mid to late November • Issues – Plan for survival or reduced operating modes and critical function battery definition
