COYOTE MANAGEMENT PLAN This Coyote Management Plan has been adopted by the Village of Machesney Park to provide for strategic action with the primary goal of increasing residents’ knowledge and understanding of how coyotes behave. This document also aims to plan for the management of coyote behavior with human safety being the primary priority. On an on-going basis, the Village will provide information pertaining to coyotes using online, social media and press releases. Coordination between Village Staff, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will also be important to implementing this plan. LEVEL TRIGGER ACTION RESPONSIBILITY LEVEL 1 SIGHTING / INQUIRY / CONCERN DATA COLLECTION / EDUCATION VILLAGE STAFF / COMMUNITY The Village will respond to reports of coyote sightings by sending a staff member to meet with affected residents and will document all sightings using a coyote incident report. Village staff will provide affected residents with educational materials that will explain how to deter coyotes from re-entering their neighborhood. LEVEL 2 MULTIPLE SIGHTINGS / CONCERNS TARGETED EDUCATION VILLAGE STAFF The Village will respond to documented concentrations of coyote sightings by sending a staff member to meet with affected residents and will document additional sightings using a coyote incident report to support an analysis of behavior patterns of concern. A more targeted approach to education will be taken, as Village staff will contact neighborhood watch groups, and mail information to residents within an area of high coyote activity to provide guidance and education for how to deter coyotes and disrupt coyote behavior (noise makers, scent-based deterrents, modifications to area habitat). LEVEL 3 THREAT / DOMESTIC PET ATTACK NUISANCE REMOVAL / TARGETED EDUCATION VILLAGE STAFF / CONTRACTOR In the event that there is a verified domestic pet attack, following an investigation, the Village may choose to hire a contractor in an attempt to locate, trap and/or lethally dispose of the nuisance coyote(s). A coyote incident report will be taken by Village staff or Sheriff’s Department personnel. LEVEL HUMAN ATTACK EMERGENCY RESPONSE / PUBLIC SAFETY /
