CARES Act general information SIUE received $9. 6 million from the U. S. Department of Education for two purposes: • To provide emergency financial aid grants to students whose lives have been disrupted, many of whom are facing financial challenges and struggling to make ends meet ($4. 8 million) • To cover any university costs associated with significant changes to the delivery of instruction due to the coronavirus ($4. 8 million)

Who is eligible for CARES Act funds? • Incurred expenses as a result of COVID-19 • Enrolled for Spring 2020 as a degree-seeking student in at least one hour of in-person coursework. Students enrolled in a fully online program prior to March 13, 2020 are not eligible. • Must be considered Title IV eligible: • Enrolled in degree or certificate program. • Making satisfactory academic progress. • Not owe an overpayment on TIV grants/loans. • Not be in default on a TIV loan. • File a certification that includes statement of educational purpose and SSN. • Be a U. S. citizen or national, permanent resident, or other eligible noncitizen. • Have returned fraudulently obtained Title IV funds if convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to charges. • Not have fraudulently received Title IV loans in excess of annual or aggregate limits. • Have repaid Title IV loan amounts in excess of annual or aggregate limits if obtained inadvertently. • Have Selective Service registration verified. • Have Social Security Number verified. • Not have a federal or state conviction for drug possession or sale, with certain time limits.

These funds may be taxable. • SIUE’s current understanding of Federal HEERF funding guidelines is that students will not be required to provide receipts for expenses. However, SIUE cannot guarantee that additional documentation will not be required at some time in the future.

Awarding criteria Available to eligible undergraduate/professional degreeseeking students who were enrolled in Spring 2020 semester as determined by the FAFSA: • Students with an EFC of 0 -5576 may request up to $1, 250 • Students with an EFC of 5577 -14000 may request up to $750 • Students with an EFC of over 14000 may request up to $500 • Students who have not filed a 2019 -2020 FAFSA, but can selfcertify that they are Title IV eligible may request up to $500

They should check all mailboxes including clutter! • We've also sent one text message. • If a student believes they are eligible but did not receive an e-mail, they should contact finaid@siue. edu and ask for a CARES Act application

What happens once students apply? • Funds are distributed via the Bursar's refund process.

What happens once students apply? • Funds are distributed via the Bursar's refund process. • If student has direct deposit, funds will be deposited to whatever account they have designated. • If student does not have direct deposit, the funds will be distributed via paper check to their permanent address. • Process takes approximately 1 -2 weeks. • Funds will be given directly to students and will not apply to any balances with SIUE. • If students received CARES Act funds but did not request the maximum amount allowed and have more COVID-19 related expenses, they can email finaid@siue. edu and request more. • Include name, University ID number, what additional expenses they have, and total amount requested (what was originally requested + additional expenses).
