Protective Factors Major protective factors for suicide include: • Effective behavioral health care for mental health and AODA needs (capacity for urgent appointments) • Easy access to a variety of clinical interventions and support for help seeking • Support from ongoing medical and mental health care relationships • Connectedness and support from individuals, family, community, and social institutions • Skills in ability to adapt to change problem solving, conflict resolution, and nonviolent ways of handling disputes; Powerlessness against current situation; wearing on resilience • Self-esteem and a sense of purpose or meaning in life- for many this is connected to employment • Cultural, religious, or personal beliefs that discourage suicide
