Suicide Risk and Protective Factors According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and the CDC
Protective Factors Major protective factors for suicide include: • Effective behavioral health care for mental health and AODA needs (capacity for urgent appointments) • Easy access to a variety of clinical interventions and support for help seeking • Support from ongoing medical and mental health care relationships • Connectedness and support from individuals, family, community, and social institutions • Skills in ability to adapt to change problem solving, conflict resolution, and nonviolent ways of handling disputes; Powerlessness against current situation; wearing on resilience • Self-esteem and a sense of purpose or meaning in life- for many this is connected to employment • Cultural, religious, or personal beliefs that discourage suicide
Major Risk Factors for Suicide • Prior suicide attempt(s); family history of suicide • Misuse and abuse of alcohol or other drugs (8% O. C. calls; 12% W. C. calls) • 60% increase in alcohol sales and overdoes with prescription meds • Mental disorders, particularly depression and other mood disorders (20% O. C. calls; 41% W. C. calls • Access to lethal means (19% O. C. calls; 22% W. C. calls) • Gun sales has increased in the last 4 weeks • Legal issues
Major Risk Factors (continued) • Sleeping too little or too much • Social isolation-(being cut-off from others) (100%- roughly) • Chronic disease and disability • Lack of access to behavioral health care (real or perceived; capacity for urgent appointments? ) • Loss-(relational, social, work or financial) (36% O. C. calls; 39% W. C. calls)
