PROTEUS TEAM THE PROTEUS PROJECT is a project that was founded by the Coventry University. The target of this project is to set a land speed record in a defined category. The realization of the project was started in the academic year 2001/2002 (development of a concept and a basic model). This year there are 6 people involved in this project: THE BACKGROUND Background of this project is to give the involved student‘s the opportunity to experience every single step of the development of such a land speed vehicle. These development steps are including the concept, design, manufacturing, testing phase and final the land speed record attempt. - 2 fourth year students (M Eng) - 3 third year students (B Eng) - 1 second year student These steps are carried out integrated in the final year project of a “Bachelor of Engineering“ or a “Master of Engineering“. The regulations of such a land speed record attempt are set by the FIA (Federation de L´automobile). The primary record of the Proteus vehicle will be attempted in the Category A (Special Automobiles), Group 2 (Reciprocating 2 - or 4 - stroke engine without supercharger. ), Cylinder capacity class 4: (500 ccm – 750 ccm) By this high aiming project target a great degree of teamwork and an involvement of the students in nearly each step of the development is required. By this proceeding a responsible acting as well as a high degree of practical experience in the motor sport sector are experienced by the students.

PROTEUS TEAM BACKGROUNDS OF THE MOTOR SPORT ENGAGEMENT OF THE COVENTRY UNIVERSITY The University

PROTEUS TEAM BACKGROUNDS OF THE MOTOR SPORT ENGAGEMENT OF THE COVENTRY UNIVERSITY The University has gained a lot of motor sport experience by the “Formula Student“ project. The first „class 1 vehicle“ was developed in 2000 and it was completely developed by the Formula Student team. But without the support and help from the industry all that would not have been possible There are implemented five different motor sport related projects, mostly with Bachelor or Master students working on them. The Proteus Project is surely quite a bit different but nevertheless the outcome of this Project will content concepts that might be applied to other projects. There as well other sources, that will give support in knowledge to the University and the Proteus Project. An example would be that the University achieved to work with Prof. Glynne Bowsher, chief engineer of the famous Thrust SSC, first vehicle that travelled faster than the speed of sound (supersonic) Furthermore the Coventry University is in contact with companies like Jaguar in the surrounding of Coventry.
