Court Language Kent Youth Justice DEFENDANT • The person who is accused of committing an offence VICTIM • A person who is harmed by an offence PLEA • When a person says they are guilty or not guilty to an offence GUILTY • When a person admits they have committed an offence NOT GUILTY • When the defendant states they did not commit the offence HEARING • When the defendant appears in Court CONVICTION • A formal decision by the court that the defendant is guilty of an offence ADJOURN • The defendant will need to attend Court at a later date TRIAL • If the defendant pleads not guilty, a trial will be held at a later date, where their solicitor will explain what has happened COURT BAIL If there is anything you don’t understand you can ask your Solicitor or the Youth Justice Team REMAND TO LOCAL AUTHORITY ACCOMMODATION • When a court date is adjourned, Children Social Work Services will decide where the defendant will live whilst waiting for their next Court date REMAND TO YOUTH DETENTION ACCOMMODATION • When a court date is adjourned, the defendant is taken to custody whilst waiting for their next Court date APPEAL • If the defendant is unhappy • The court may give the with their sentence, or if defendant conditions to follow they are found guilty after in the community to help keep trial, their solicitor can ask them and other people safe the higher Court to take until the next court date another look at the case.
