COURSE INTRODUCTION Prof. Giglioni

Course organisation Monographic course (Giglioni): 2 academic hours each, in the first semester (2 days/week) Language training classes (King/Potter): 4 hours/level (2 days/week), all year.

Course objectives & learning outcomes 1) advancing students’ foreign language competence (4 skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking) 2) consolidating previous language knowledge

Expected Outcomes plus: corresponds to independent users of the language, i. e. those who have the necessary fluency to communicate without effort with native speakers

CEFRL The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) is the system that defines and explains the different levels of oral and written expression and comprehension foreign languages. It consists of 6 levels of reference: three blocks (A or basic user, B or independent user and C or proficient user), which are in turn divided into two sublevels, 1 and 2.

Course contents (Giglioni) Focus on: 1) Vocabulary (English at work) 2) Listening and comprehension: from easier to more complex tasks (open and closed questions)

Language training classes timetable (lettorati) King : Wednesday: 14 -16 and 16 -18 Friday: 12 -14 and 14 -16 (aula T 02) Potter : from Tuesday to Friday, 10 -12 (aula T 02) New this year! Tutoring for homework (1 h, followed by ricevimento 30 min)

Assessment Written language test : Testing grammar, vocabulary, and listening - cloze test (35 min) - dictation (about 15 min) - listening & comprehension(about 10 min) - vocabulary (gap filling, 10 min) A FEW DAYS LATER… (see Giglioni bacheca) Oral language test: Interview (about 10 min) on selected readings which will be analysed during lettorati and 1 article of your choice (with similar topic, lenght, language level)

Assessment Giglioni’s test is based on In Company’s selected units: both listening & comprehension exercise and gap filling exercise (15 sentences) ARE TAKEN from the book + workbook (online coursebook extension) you can find a mock test in Bacheca docente

Assessment - All the parts contribute to the final mark - The written test is composed of 3 parts: you need to get at least 18 in each of them. - Students have to pass the written test in order to access the oral. If you fail the written test, you will have to do it again the following appello. N. B. : if you want, you can refuse your written test mark (you don’t need to tell the staff, simply you don’t show up the day of the oral test). Please consider you take responsibility for getting a lower mark for the written test in the future (or a higher one ).

Certificates

Certificates You are requested to send your certificate to prof. Giglioni for validation by the end of October. The certificate needs to be recent (not more than 2 yrs)
