TOPIC SENTENCE �Wearing school uniforms is a highly controversial issue in the United States.
INTRODUCE COUNTER ARGUMENT �There are many who believe that wearing school uniforms is a bad choice for students.
DIRECT QUOTATION WITH LEADER STATEMENT � According to Dr. Alan Hilfer, senior psychologist at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, “By instituting a uniform policy, schools are taking away kids’ individuality—schools need to decide if that sacrifice is worth making” (Svensen).
ANALYSIS OF QUOTATION � Dr. Hiler hits on a very important issue in this debate. If every student looked like another student, then the policy would in fact take away the freedom students have to dress the way that best expresses who they are. One of the roles of teachers is to instill an independence in students, to make them think for themselves. A school uniform policy would negate that teaching.
PARAPHRASE � Likewise, other experts believe that uniform policies are not deterrents to crime, nor can they be sure that it is the uniform policy alone that makes reductions in discipline issues possible (Svenson).
ANALYSIS OF PARAPHRASE � Just because students wear blue shirts with kaki pants doesn’t mean that they will not bully other children, get in fights, or get better grades. It just means that they will look better doing all those things.
CLOSURE SENTENCE � So for some, a school uniform policy is not a great avenue to take when dealing with children and their individual freedoms, nor does it deter mischief among them.
