Countable vs. Non-Countable Nouns All nouns can be classified into two categories: countable & noncountable. A noun is “countable” if it is made up of separate, individual parts which (duh) can be counted. A noun is “non-countable” if it cannot be made plural because it is measured by mass or size instead of individual parts.
How to Tell if a Noun is countable… Would you ask “how many? ” or “how much? ” to the following nouns? Nouns People Students Traffic Blood Pounds Space Light “How many? ” or “How much? ”
How to Tell if a Noun is countable… If you can ask, “How many? ” then the noun is countable. It’s made up of individual, measurable parts. Likewise, if a noun is classified as a “How much? ” then the noun non-countable. Nouns “How many? ” or is“How much? ” People How many? (Countable) Students How many? (Countable) Traffic How much? Blood How much? Pounds How many? (Countable) Space How much? Light How much?
In other words… If you can assign a number to the noun, it is countable. If you have to resort to a more general measurement, like a “a lot” or “so much, ” then the noun is non-countable. Countable example: There was so much traffic on Route 1 today that I was almost late for school. Non-Countable example: There were 40 cars backed up on Route 1 today, and I was almost late for school.
