Countable nouns • things, objects, people, places, etc. • can be counted • can be: SINGULAR: PLURAL: a + noun one + noun + -s e. g. a book, a friend, a building. . . two books, three friends, four buildings. . .

USE - singular form of the verb with a singular countable noun: • • dog, cat, animal, man, person bottle, box, litre coin, note, dollar table, chair, suitcase, bag e. g. I am sitting on a chair. -and plural form of the verb with plural nouns: e. g. Your bags are on the floor.

Irregular Nouns: SINGULAR child man woman ox SINGULAR foot goose tooth NO CHANGE deer fish means offspring series sheep species PLURAL -EN children men women oxen PLURAL -EE feet geese teeth deer fish means offspring series sheep species

Uncountable nouns • • substances, concepts etc that cannot be divided into separate elements have only one form and cannot "count" them e. g. music, art, love, happiness advice, information, news furniture, luggage rice, sugar, butter, water electricity, gas, power money, currency • we usually treat uncountable nouns as singular • we use a singular verb with them e. g. : – This news is very important. – Your luggage looks heavy.

Uncountable nouns CAN be counted if we use: • A piece / a slice of… cheese / meat • A bowl of… soup /cereal • A cup of … tea • A bottle / a glass of…wine • A carton of … milk • A bar of … chocolate / butter • A tube of ketchup
