Searches for WIMPs and WIMP-like particles • • Super. CDMS (now-> 2025) and follow-on projects will complete a search for “light WIMPs” ~1 -10 Ge. V down to level of neutrino background ~ 10 -44 cm 2 using high voltage cryogenic detectors. With the LZ liquid-xenon TPC experiment (now->2023), we will probe dark matter particles with weak- scale masses and couplings down to 10 -48 cm 2. A follow-on project such as DARWIN or ARGO may improve by one order of magnitude. Super. CDMS Talks by Lauren Hsu, Hugh Lippincott https: //indico. fnal. gov/conference. Display. py? conf. Searches for the QCD Axion • Currently we are lead lab for ADMX-G 2 search for QCD axions (now- > ~2020). We want to host the next generation experiment on site at Fermilab in a dedicated high-field magnet facility. The 20 -year goal is to discover or exclude the QCD axion as dark matter. 3 Presenter | Presentation Title 12/13/2021
Goals for Dark Matter Detection, continued. • Search for dark matter interactions with electrons using CCDs (SENSEI). • Use LSST to study observable signatures of dark sector physics, including dark energy, dark matter, neutrinos and signatures of inflation. Fermilab will contribute to data analysis pipeline, data management, calibrations, science analysis. Develop next generation spectroscopic survey instrument as follow up. • Leverage existing accelerator and detector facilities at Fermilab and SLAC to search for light dark matter: BNB at Fermilab and LDMX at SLAC. Fermilab seeks to provide a major detector subsystem for LDMX. Improve BNB beam dump to increase sensitivity by order of magnitude. Develop new detector options for dedicated 120 Ge. V beam dump DM search. 4 Presenter | Presentation Title 12/13/2021

Things we are “keeping an eye on”: i. e. Fermilab scientists are interested but not yet committed. • Development of novel cryogenic dark matter detectors using special Fermilab facilities and expertise. Examples- search for light WIMP interactions with cryogenic photon/ phonon sensors or excitations in superfluid helium, novel quantum devices for axion detection. • Large bubble chamber experiment to search for spin-dependent WIMP interactions beyond the reach of xenon and argon experiments or perform a detailed study of WIMP nuclear couplings. Follow on to PICO-500. • Next generation space instrument to look for gamma rays from dark matter annihilation in galaxy (“Super Fermi”). • Studies of Dark Energy and Dark Matter with WFIRST. • Astrophysical neutrino telescopes such as ICECUBE/ PINGU. • Searches for ~ 1 Hz gravity waves and ultralight dark matter using cold atom interferometers. MAGIS-100 proposal for interferometer in Nu. MI shaft. 7 Presenter | Presentation Title 12/13/2021
