Corruption in the Catholic Church ü Time period referred to as Age of Faith. ü Many thought the only way to Heaven was through the Catholic Church. ü This put the church in a position of great power. ü The Humanist Movement led people to begin to question the church’s practices. ü A major problem with the Church was their conflict with European monarchs.
Corruption in the Catholic Church ü As feudalism declined, the Church wanted to make sure that it did not lose any power to the monarchs. ü Pope used excommunication as a way to force monarchs to go along with their wishes.
Corruption in the Catholic Church ü (1305 -1375) Seven popes ruled the Church from France, this time period is known as the Babylonian Captivity. ü (1376) Pope Gregory moved the papal court back to Rome. ü (1378) Urban V was elected Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. ü While, Pope Clement VII sets up a rival papacy in Avignon, France. ü This time period is known as the Great Schism or Divide.
Corruption in the Catholic Church ü The most controversial practice for raising money for the Catholic Church was the practice of selling indulgences. ü The idea was based on the fact that a sinner could work to reduce his/her years in purgatory. ü When a person sinned, they could confess and perform a good deed or they could purchase an indulgence. ü Some clergy members taught that salvation could be achieved through the purchase of an indulgence.
