Why Target Do. D Aerospace? Aerospace Corrosion Costs Represent ~50% of Do. D’s Total Annual Corrosion Costs $19. 1 Billion annual direct cost of corrosion to Do. D Note: stated costs do not include up front investment in design, materials, development, production, and testing for corrosion prevention and mitigation during system acquisition 3

Specifications and Standards Background Ø Do. D mandates corrosion prevention and control (CPC) planning

Specifications and Standards Background Ø Do. D mandates corrosion prevention and control (CPC) planning be incorporated as part of the design, manufacture, construction, operation & sustainment of products & facilities Ø To facilitate incorporation of CPC processes, Do. D utilizes both government and industry standards for CPC and materials and processes (M&P) q Standards developed based on lessons learned from development, operation and maintenance of equipment and facilities Ø Many CPC-related Specifications and Standards eliminated during 1990’s Acquisition Reform q Causes corrosion requirements to be negotiated individually during acquisition 4
