WHY WE NEED TO CREATE A CAREER PATHWAY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE INTO BCC §

WHY WE NEED TO CREATE A CAREER PATHWAY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE INTO BCC § Birmingham is the youngest city in Europe with under-25’s accounting for nearly 40% of our population yet this is not reflective of BCC’s workforce - the average of a BCC worker is 47 years of age. § We need to attract and develop young people with a skills set that can support a 21 st Century workforce. § We need organisational agility, resilience and adaptability to undertake future roles within the organisation. § Offering work experience gives a taster to young people to consider a career with us. Offering work experience is the first step…. PAGE 2

GOING FORWARD § The first point of call for all work experience opportunities is registration on-line via www. cog-brum. co. uk. § BCC’s on-line platform is a medium which allows us to engage with our young people in Birmingham transparently. § We can easily signpost students from schools, colleges and universities to other organisations who advertise their opportunities on Cog-brum. § Procurement to encourage our Business Charter signatories to host work experience placements – to link in with Contracting. § Councillors also have an important part to play in building relationships and creating opportunities with educational establishments and local businesses – liaise with Member L&D Lead/Corporate Parenting Support Officer. Working together can make this happen PAGE 3
