Move right on a Method #1 – Adding integers with a number line to add a positive integer. line Move left on a number line to add a negative integer.

Writing Math Parentheses are used to separate addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division signs from negative integers. – 2 + (– 5) = – 7

Ex. 1 A) 5 + (-4) Ex. 1 B) -4 + 7 Start at 5 on your number line and move left 4 spaces 5 + (-4) = 1 Start at -4 on your number line and move right 7 spaces -4 + 7 = 3

Addition Shortcuts on Notecard (Positive) + (Positive) = (Add & Positive) (Negative) + (Negative) = (Add & Negative) (Neg) + (Pos) or (Pos) + (Neg) subtract digits and take the sign of the bigger #

Ex. 2 A) -2 + (-4) = -6 Ex. 2 B) 6 + (-8) = -2 Ex. 2 C) -7 + 11 = 4

Ex. 3) Evaluate y + (-2) for y = 7 Ex. 4) Evaluate x + 3 for x = -9 Substitute Solve 7 + (-2) = Substitute Solve -9 + 3 =
