CORNEA 1. Corneal Epithelium It is made up of stratified squamous non-keratinised epithelium. Superficial layer has microvilli- they play important role in retaining film of fluid over the surface cornea. At the periphery of cornea, the epithelium becomes continuous with- that of ocular conjunctiva.
CORNEA 2. Anterior limiting membrane. Also called Bowmans membrane. It is made up of fine collagen fibrils embeded in matrix.
CORNEA 3. Substantia propria It is a thick layer made of regular lamina of collagen fibers with flattened connective tissue cells. Between them corneal corpuscles are seen –they are nuclei of fibroblasts -also called keratocytes. Transperancy of cornea is because of regular arrangement of fibers and same refractive index of fibers & ground-substance.
CORNEA 4. Posterior limiting membrane It is also called- Descemets membrane. Homogenous in nature. It is true basement membrane & very resistant to infection. At the margin of cornea it is continuous with fibers that form a network at irido-corneal angle.
CORNEA 5. Layer of Endothelium It is also called pavement membrane. Lined by single layer of flattened cells. Has contact with aqueous humour.
