What is a Copyright Law? A set of federal laws which grant authors and artists the exclusive right to benefit from their creations. Property of the creator Cannot be used or changed without the owner’s consent Encourages creativity of an artist, to make their own work
Trademark and Patent Laws Patent laws protect inventions No other person can create a replica of a patented product Patent doesn’t have to be in use Ex: apple Trademark laws protect iconic slogans and symbols of companies Ex: Mcdonald’s, Nike Copyright notice Includes “C” in a circle, the date the work was created, and the author of the work
How Long Does A Copyright Last? Spans either 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever comes first After the copyright is over the work becomes public domain Anyone can use the work without permission
What is not copyrighted? Public Domain Common phrases, generic information, facts Ex: Nike “Just Do It” Works that have an expired copyright Disney Works created by the U. S. government works that have been “donated” to the public domain by the creator
