Copyright Issues The Technicalities of Legalities
Software Copyright Issues • Software may be distributed by a network, but it may require a network license to be legal. • It is illegal for anyone to violate the software’s copyright laws. • Under a copyright, computer software registers as a literary work. • Software can carry a copyright and be set with restrictions and limitations. • The copyright notice is NOT required to be on the document
Software Purchasing Agreements • Libraries may lend software to their patrons with restrictions. • Organizations have ineffective purchasing policies and procedures that are enforced for their software. • Make sure you keep your licenses (electronic or paper format) because they are proof of compliance with the law. • Software must be installed and used in accordance with the publisher’s terms and agreements.
Software Piracy • Illegal software can be incomplete or contain a virus. • You do not have to sell the illegal software to be breaking the law. • Directors/Owners of companies can be fined for being out of software compliance. • Using software that you have purchased illegally, leaves you with no technical support.
Acceptable Use Policy • An AUP must address computer access and transmission of data within the school. • An AUP must state that it compiles with all state and federal telecommunications codes, laws, and regulations. • Union’s AUP says that computers should be used in a manner consistent with all Union policies. • Union’s AUP also says to avoid any action that may cause damage to a computer. • Union’s AUP states that deleting any application or system is prohibited any emails are subject to be monitored.
What can I do? • I can make sure I understand the laws, so that I am always in compliance. • I can create original art and literary works to use in my classroom. • I can teach my students about copyright laws in my classroom. • I can stay up-to-date on current laws and regulations on copyright issues.
